AOSIS was born in 1999 out of a passion for the further development of people in their chosen professional field through continuing professional development (CPD). The founder of AOSIS, Pierre JT de Villiers, has years of experience in the education industry as an academic, teacher and researcher at Stellenbosch University. Soon after identifying the need for health practitioners to spend more time at home with their families, he developed a solution known as AOSIS eCPD to enable them to achieve their CPD in the comfort of their homes via learning on the internet.
The AOSIS eCPD™ division, which offers accessible and affordable further education for the health professions, has grown and established itself as an industry leader.
The journey of developing systems for CPD resulted in a process of empowerment and expertise development within the company to provide and support e-learning systems for employers and education providers. In 2006 AOSIS became the official Moodle® Partner and provides e-learning platforms and related services to leading South African companies and educational providers through its AOSIS Ituta™ service.
Two years later AOSIS utilised a golden opportunity to provide scholarly e-publishing solutions for a local publisher and thus the Group invested in the development and launch of AOSIS OpenJournals™, enabling it to provide support and publishing services in smaller scholarly journal markets where the emphasis is on Open Access scholarly publishing.
AOSIS ended the year 2010 on a high note with the publishing of its first Open Access book in three digital formats.
